The day before yesterday, we had a lesson about the Garden Design. Garden Design is a very interesting subject, and the professional Mr. Zhao who taught the lesson was spent about 1 hour to tell us many things about this subject. He is a very famous landscape architect in China. We listened carefully and most of us enjoy the time.
The first thing Mr. Zhao told us was the meaning of ‘Garden’. This word in Latin is ‘Geneden’. ‘Gen’ means the wall out of the garden, and ‘Eden’ means the garden with fun. The whole word used to mean the Paradise. However, ‘Garden’ has different meaning at present. People think that garden is the place where is with clay, plants, stones, and water. Archaeologist found that garden was meaning Sacred Grave on the pictures in Pyramid in Egypt.
The second thing he told us was the history about Chinese Garden Design. About Chinese Garden Design, there are four kinds of it. Imperial garden and private garden are common. Gardens of temples and the gardens in famous places are also common in China.
In our hometown, Jiangsu, there are many gardens especially in Suzhou. After he told us was the history about Chinese Garden Design, he introduced the characteristics of the gardens in Suzhou. The most important characteristic of gardens in Suzhou is the designers must achieve balance between water and stones. Although the gardens were made by people, but they were like work of art what were made by nature. This is the main idea what the designers want.
Mr. Zhao told us there were two famous designers in China, Zhang and Ge. People think that works what were Zhang made are magical. For example, the rockery in Ou Yuan is nice because when you stand in different places beside it and look at it, you may find different feelings. Ge was also a good designer because of his unique methods to design. He always made the cold materials become alive. He did not just make every parts of a garden together, he tried to make an integral whole. They gave the gardens what were made lives.
Mr. Zhao could not finish his speech because it was t0o late. We were obsessed by listened his speech, and we hoped he could finish. It is very meaningful for us to learn some things about Garden Design because it is good for us to learn knowledge of history and Arts. I enjoyed that afternoon and thank for Mr. Zhao’s brilliant speech.
